Been a bit since I posted. Was focusing on coding the card gallery when I suddenly became sick and needed a week of bedrest.
Still not at 100%, but the good thing about taking a break in the middle of coding is that you can come back with fresh eyes. And now, I have a gallery to present: The Cards
The gallery has all 159 sketches with a filter at the top for different card types and card categories (ramp, card-advantage, etc.).
You can also find that the link in the menu bar is finally active!
Paint Time: 140-minutes
I wanted to recreate the wooden stained style of the original piece, so I tried a different technique in clip studio paint. Thinking of applying it to more of my later sketches that are heavier in line strokes and not restricted to a timer, as I am starting to like the vibe of keeping most of the sketch intact.
I also finished all my sketches, coming out to 159 in total, and with this technique, I feel like I could get to all of them. So, 151 more to go!
5 months, 159 sketches, & 3 books later, I have finished my Scryfall Random Sketch Commander deck pool!
I've made public decklists of the pool on Archidekt and Moxfield, so if you have any ideas of what cuts I should make, let me know!
Archidekt linkIn the first two months of this project, I just sketched one side of a double-faced card. Back then I would only spend 10-20 minutes on a card, so I tried to challenge myself to spend 20 minutes on each of these arts.
Sketch Time: 20-minutes
I started with a 10 minute timer, since that is how I started this sketch-a-day project. After 5 minutes I realized I didn't not pace myself well, so extended it 20 minutes.
Sketch Time: 20-minutes
I do love when the transforming mechanic is used to represent more of a mindset change than a magical one, the grieving sister taking up the sword in this case.
Sketch Time: 20-minutes
Instead of trying to spend my 20 minutes on the whole picture, I focused on getting as much detail on one side, imagining that I'd mirror it in post.
Sketch Time: 20-minutes
I think this final sketch shows off my progression, with the 3rd image here comparing this to the side I did three months ago. I can capture a lot more in 20 minutes.
Sketch Time: 69-minutes
This is my favorite of the dragon-eye lands. My LGS didn't have them, so it's auspicious to roll it for my randomized sketch (there are only 8 unique arts on scryfall, so the chances weren't bad).
Sketch Time: 69-minutes
One of the earliest artworks I remember playing with when I started mtg. Sad to hear about his partial retirement, but he's focusing on his health, and so should you, whoever's reading this.
Sketch Time: 75-minutes
Randomizing this Mountain art seemed like a daunting sketch, then I realized I could invert the original, sketch that, then reinvert my sketch. I think the results turned out better than expected.
Sketch Time: 44-minutes
This swamp has such good vibes. Even has a shooting star.
Sketch Time: 64-minutes
Amazing art conveying the idea of blue's color identity often associated with affecting the library as a sea of books.
Sketch Time: 20-minutes
I like to match lands between basics or to the theme of the deck. Hopefully my brain will be chill with hodgepodge of randomized frames from throughout Magic's history.
Sketch Time: 109-minutes
I love that the two sides of the art reflect the respective side of the card's mechanics. This marks the end of my 4 weeks of random lands. Next up: Basics.
Sketch Time: 55-minutes
It was only when I started shading that I noticed that there was a spotlight looking for the thief in the artwork.
Sketch Time: 54-minutes
I do be loving when the art's colors match the pips in the card design. The greys in the clouds/reflections even work for the colorless pip.
Sketch Time: 38-minutes
This def came out better than I thought it would on screen compared to just looking at my sketch in person.
Sketch Time: 44-minutes
Limited with greyscale, but I think I got vibe with negative space and a bit of smudging.
Sketch Time: 45-minutes
Took me a second to notice the ship in the background, but I'm guessing that's the mages referenced in the flavor text.
Sketch Time: 46-minutes
Another art using all 5 colors of magic to represent the card's ability to fetch basic lands. And I'm, of course, happy to have it in the random deck pool as fixing.
Sketch Time: 111-minutes
This is one of my favorite MDFC art pairings in terms of flavor and mechanical story-telling.
Sketch Time: 62-minutes
Sometimes you don't really notice something in the art until you read the flavor text.
Sketch Time: 49-minutes
Do the Cactarantulas spin these webs or did normal spiders crawl through the Omenpaths? Because from what I've learned about Thunder Junction is that no fauna existed before the Omenpaths.
Sketch Time: 77-minutes
I just realized why my scaling seems off with the new sketchpad. 👋Ratios👋
